The HERTEL 1001142 is a VBMT-style solid carbide turning insert with a TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating and HC210 manufacturer grade. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape, a 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch) inscribed circle, and a 0.0079 inch corner radius, making it suited for light to medium finishing operations. The screw-on holding method provides repeatable seating and quick indexing. This insert carries a positive rake geometry and neutral hand orientation, giving machinists flexibility in toolholder setups. It is used by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals in turning centers and engine lathes.
This insert is designed for turning operations on a range of workpiece materials. Primary workpiece material classifications include M (stainless steel), N (non-ferrous), and S (superalloys and heat-resistant alloys). Secondary workpiece material classification is K (cast iron). The HC210 grade and TiN coating support consistent chip control at moderate cutting parameters. The maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inch (1.25 mm), placing this insert in finish and light semi-finish turning applications. The T-style chip breaker aids chip evacuation during these cuts.
Designed for use in screw-on VBMT-style toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch inscribed circle insert with a 0.1732 inch hole diameter. Compatible with material grades C2 and C4 per standard carbide classification. Suitable for toolholders conforming to ANSI/ISO VBMT insert pocket specifications.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Before indexing or replacing an insert, the machine spindle must be fully stopped and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified engagement — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the insert. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure full contact and accurate positioning.
