The HERTEL 1000573 is a screw-on style turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated VBMT2205LF in the HC210 manufacturer grade, this insert is manufactured from solid carbide with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating to extend tool life and reduce heat buildup at the cutting edge. The 35-degree diamond insert shape (V-style) provides a sharp, positive rake geometry suited to finishing and light interrupted cuts. Key dimensions include a 0.25-inch inscribed circle, an insert length of 0.4358 inches (11.07 mm), a thickness of 0.125 inches, and a corner radius of 0.0079 inches. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is engineered for turning operations on stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and cast materials, corresponding to ISO workpiece material groups M, N, S, and K. The VBMT style with a positive rake and Type T chip breaker geometry makes it well suited to finishing passes, contour turning, and applications where low cutting forces and surface finish quality matter. The screw-on holding method provides secure clamping in compatible VBMT toolholders with minimal insert deflection during the cut. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), placing this insert firmly in the light-to-finish turning range.
Compatible with VBMT-style screw-on toolholders accepting a 1/4-inch inscribed circle insert with a clearance code B, tolerance code M, and 0.1102-inch screw hole diameter. Material grades C2 and C4 apply. Rated for ISO workpiece material groups M, N, S (primary) and K (secondary).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the turret or tool post locked out before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench or insert key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not over-torque, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture under excessive clamp force. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating a new insert to ensure proper seating and edge geometry.
