The HERTEL 1000406 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SPG421 style, designed for precision metal-turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under manufacturer grade HC335, providing wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of cutting conditions. The insert features a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, a 90-degree square shape, and a positive rake geometry. At 0.125 inches thick with an 11-degree relief angle, it is suited for light-to-medium finishing and semi-finishing passes. Machinists and CNC operators install this insert into compatible SPG-style toolholders using a clamp-type holding method.
This insert is part of the HERTEL KENDEX series and is rated for use on primary workpiece material group P (carbon and alloy steels) and secondary material group M (stainless steels). Typical applications include turning, facing, and light profiling on steel and stainless components in production and job-shop environments. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both left- and right-hand toolholder configurations. The maximum depth of cut is 0.049 inches (1.25 mm), making it appropriate for finishing and light semi-finishing cuts rather than heavy stock removal.
Designed for use in SPG-style clamp-type toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle square insert with tolerance code G and clearance code P. Part of the HERTEL KENDEX series.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct clamp screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer specifications and inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut of 0.049 inches to avoid insert fracture or premature edge failure.
