The HERTEL 1000404 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SPMR421 style, designed for precision metal turning on CNC and manual lathes. It carries a multi-layer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under the HC335 manufacturer grade, providing wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of cutting conditions. The insert features a 90-degree square shape with a positive rake geometry, a neutral hand orientation, and a 0.5-inch inscribed circle. The 1/64-inch (0.0156-inch) corner radius suits finishing and semi-finishing passes where edge sharpness and surface finish are priorities. It is clamped into the toolholder using a top-clamp holding method.
This insert is part of the KENDEX series and is intended for turning applications on ferrous metals. The primary workpiece material designation is P (steel), with secondary suitability for M (stainless steel), corresponding to material grades C5 and C6. It is suited for light-to-moderate depths of cut, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). Typical applications include external turning, facing, and profiling on production machining setups. The chip breaker style is R, which supports controlled chip formation at moderate feed rates.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for SPMR421-style toolholders. No specific compatible model numbers were provided in the product data; consult your toolholder documentation to confirm insert style and size code 421 fitment.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Before seating the insert, power down and lock out the machine spindle in accordance with applicable safety procedures. Ensure the insert pocket and clamp are free of chips and debris before seating to prevent rocking or improper seating. Do not exceed the maximum recommended depth of cut for the insert size, and verify clamping torque against the toolholder manufacturer specifications.
