The HERTEL 08512220 is a threaded shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in low-tensile strength materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with an oxide coating, this bit meets NAS 965 Type B specification and is sized to wire gauge No. 40 (0.0980 inches decimal equivalent). The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust force during penetration. The web-thinned, tapered web construction improves chip evacuation and cutting efficiency. At 1.0 inch overall length with a 9/16-inch flute length, this is a compact bit suited for tight-access drilling applications. The 1/4-28 threaded hex shank provides positive retention in compatible quick-change chucks.
This bit is intended for use in light-gauge metals, plastics, and other low-tensile strength materials commonly encountered in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing trade work. The compact 1.0-inch overall length makes it well suited for drilling in confined spaces — equipment cabinets, junction boxes, panel enclosures, and structural members where clearance is limited. Right-hand cutting direction and regular spiral flutes make this a standard-use bit for production drilling or service work requiring consistent, repeatable hole sizing at the No. 40 wire gauge diameter.
Designed for use with quick-change drill systems and tool holders accepting a 1/4-28 threaded hex shank. Suitable for general-purpose drilling in low-tensile strength materials per the NAS 965 Type B specification.
Install and remove this bit only with the tool unpowered and the chuck fully disengaged. Confirm the 1/4-28 threaded shank is fully seated and locked in the chuck before operation. Use appropriate cutting speed for the material being drilled — excessive speed in metal applications accelerates edge wear on HSS tooling. Eye protection and gloves are standard PPE when operating any rotary cutting tool.
