The HERTEL 02387496 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for close-tolerance drilling in metal, plastic, and similar materials where a shorter, more rigid tool is required. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride coating, this bit runs at higher surface speeds and resists wear longer than uncoated HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces thrust and enables the bit to self-center without a pilot hole. At 1.375 inches overall length with a 0.5-inch flute length, this stub-length format minimizes deflection and is well suited to CNC machine tools, drill presses, and turret lathes in production environments.
This bit is sized at wire gauge number 56, equivalent to 0.0465 inch decimal diameter, placing it in the small-diameter precision range commonly used in aerospace, electronics assembly, and tight-tolerance machining work. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard collets and drill chucks without adapters. The regular spiral, two-flute configuration with a parallel web and web-thinning promotes chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole applications. Machinists, toolmakers, and CNC operators in job shops and production facilities are the primary installers of this tooling.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.0465-inch straight cylindrical shank, as found on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes performing small-diameter precision drilling operations.
Machine tool operators should ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed is set to a value appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before beginning. Confirm the drill chuck or collet is clean and undamaged before seating the shank to prevent runout. At small diameters such as this, excessive feed pressure is the leading cause of bit breakage; allow the cutting geometry to do the work. Follow shop safety standards and wear appropriate eye protection during all drilling operations.
