The HERTEL 02387462 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, close-tolerance drilling in metal and similar materials. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, the bit runs cooler and lasts longer between sharpenings than uncoated HSS tooling. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking on flat and curved surfaces. At 1.625 inches overall length, the screw machine format fits tightly in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes where standard-length bits would interfere. This bit is sized to wire gauge Number 53, equal to 0.0595 inches in decimal.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in machine shops, manufacturing facilities, and fabrication environments. The short overall length and straight-cylindrical shank make it compatible with quick-change chucks and standard collet systems. A web-thinned, parallel-web design with a regular spiral flute promotes chip evacuation and helps prevent chip packing in shallow-to-moderate-depth holes. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary users, though the bit also fits HVAC and sheet metal shops drilling small pilot holes in thin-gauge steel.
Designed as a standard screw machine length drill bit with a straight-cylindrical shank sized at 0.0595 inches, compatible with any chuck or collet system that accepts that shank diameter in drill presses, CNC lathes, turret machines, and handheld drill drivers.
This bit is installed and changed by machinists or qualified tradespeople following standard toolroom safety practices. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before running the spindle. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating before each use — chipped or worn edges reduce hole accuracy and increase heat buildup. Operate at spindle speeds appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter; consult published HSS speed-and-feed tables for small-diameter bits in steel and non-ferrous metals.
