The CHICAGO-LATROBE 50749 is an extra length high speed steel drill bit designed for long-reach drilling applications in metal fabrication, maintenance, and industrial settings. The bit measures 0.42 inches in diameter with a 12-inch overall length and a 9-inch spiral flute, giving it the reach needed to bore through deep sections or thick stock where standard-length bits fall short. An oxide finish reduces friction and provides moderate heat resistance during drilling. The 118-degree notched point and web-thinned, tapered web construction help reduce the force needed to start and sustain a cut. Cutting direction is right-hand. This is a general purpose bit suited for production shops, tool rooms, and field maintenance crews working with steel and cast iron.
The 50749 is built for long-reach drilling in cast iron and steel workpieces. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks without adapters, making it straightforward to deploy on drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills. The 12-inch overall length with a 3-inch shank makes it practical for deep-hole work on structural steel, machine frames, castings, and similar heavy materials. The Series 120X designation identifies it within the CHICAGO-LATROBE extended-length product line, indicating consistent manufacturing tolerances and geometry across the series.
Designed as a general purpose extra length drill bit for right-hand drilling in cast iron and steel. Compatible with any standard drill chuck that accepts a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.4219-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by machinists or qualified tradespeople familiar with drill press and power drill operation. Always secure the workpiece before drilling and confirm the chuck is properly tightened on the shank. Reduce feed rate and use cutting fluid when drilling deep holes in steel or cast iron to manage heat buildup and chip evacuation. Inspect the bit for wear or damage before each use, as extra-length bits are subject to higher deflection loads than standard-length tooling.
