The YG-1 Z2465 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 5/16-24 UNF internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming-style forming tap displaces material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger threads with better surface finish. Made from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E-V3) with a bright uncoated finish, it is built for use in ductile materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, and mild steel. With a thread limit of H5 and right-hand thread direction, it meets close-tolerance threading requirements in production and maintenance environments. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
The Z2465 is suited for blind hole threading applications where chip evacuation is a concern. The bottoming chamfer, with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads, allows the tap to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The Series Z2 designation places it within YG-1's standard thread forming line. It is appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand tapping operations where coolant-through tooling is not required. The 4 oil grooves help distribute tapping fluid during operation, which is especially important in forming applications where lubricant reduces forming forces and improves tool life.
Designed for use in ductile metals where thread forming is preferred over thread cutting; suited for standard tap holders and collet chucks accepting a 0.318-inch shank diameter in manual and CNC tapping setups.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication - apply tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap and workpiece before use, particularly in blind hole applications. Ensure the correct tap drill size for thread forming (larger than a cut-tap drill size) is used for 5/16-24 UNF to avoid excessive forming forces or tap breakage. Power down or disengage the spindle before loading or removing the tap from the holder. Tapping torque should be appropriate for the material and tap size; consult tooling reference data for recommended values for HSS forming taps in the target material.
