The YG-1 Q6400 is a spiral flute pipe tap designed for cutting 1/4-18 NPTF threads in ferrous and stainless steel workpieces. It is manufactured from vanadium high speed steel and finished with a Hardslick coating that reduces friction and extends tool life under demanding production conditions. The 15-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation up and out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind or deep through-hole applications. With four flutes and a right-hand cutting direction, this tap delivers consistent thread form for leak-free pipe connections. It suits production shops, maintenance facilities, and trade professionals working with hydraulic, pneumatic, or fluid-system fittings.
This tap is suited for threading pipe-thread ports and fittings in steel and stainless steel components. NPTF threads produce a mechanically pressure-tight seal without relying solely on sealant, making this tool relevant for plumbing, HVAC refrigerant piping, hydraulic manifolds, and similar fluid-system assembly work. The spiral flute geometry makes it particularly effective in through-hole and moderately deep blind-hole applications where straight-flute taps struggle with chip management. It is used in both manual tapping and low-speed CNC or drill-press setups.
Designed for cutting 1/4-18 NPTF threads in steel and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for use with standard tap handles, tapping attachments, and low-speed CNC spindles sized for a 0.5625-inch shank diameter.
Pipe taps should be installed and operated by machinists or qualified tradespeople familiar with thread-cutting procedures. Always secure the workpiece and ensure proper alignment before beginning the tapping operation to avoid tap breakage or cross-threading. Use a cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, to protect the cutting edges and improve thread quality. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace it when thread quality degrades.
