The WIDIA 6196991 is a solid carbide milling insert in the APMT series, designed for indexable face and shoulder milling operations. Carrying the ANSI/ISO designation APMT1604PDR and manufactured to grade WU20PM, this insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering thermal resistance and wear protection in demanding cutting environments. The parallelogram insert shape, positive rake geometry, and honed cutting edge work together to reduce cutting forces and maintain edge integrity on difficult workpiece materials. With 2 cutting edges and screw-in holding, it is a direct drop-in for compatible indexable milling toolholders used by machinists and tooling technicians in production and job-shop settings.
This insert is intended for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium as primary workpiece materials, with secondary suitability for cast iron and hard materials. The positive rake and 11-degree relief angle suit finishing and semi-finishing passes where controlled chip formation and surface finish matter. The APMT1604PDR is compatible with the CIP cutter series and is a right-hand cut configuration. It is sized for insert size code 1604, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.6689 inches and an inscribed circle of 0.3638 inches, making it a standard choice for medium-duty indexable milling on CNC machining centers.
Designed for use in CIP-series indexable milling cutter bodies accepting APMT1604PDR-style inserts. Suitable for right-hand toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO APMT insert standards. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and screw torque specification against the cutter body manufacturer documentation before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw specified by the cutter body manufacturer - do not substitute fasteners. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping screw threads for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as a contaminated pocket will affect runout and edge life.
