The WIDIA 5879220 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. Built to Series I4S specifications, it features a 1/2 inch cutting diameter, a 5/8 inch length of cut, and a 4-flute helical geometry with a 30-degree helix angle. The bright/uncoated finish makes it suitable for a wide range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 1/2 inch in diameter, and the overall length is 2-1/2 inches. It is centercutting capable, allowing plunge entry, and features right-hand cutting and flute direction.
This end mill is intended for use in CNC machining centers, manual mills, and production environments where consistent tool geometry and material versatility are required. The solid carbide construction provides rigidity and wear resistance, making it appropriate for shops running steel, stainless, and harder alloys. It suits finishing and semi-finishing passes in toolrooms, job shops, and production facilities. The regular length classification and fixed helix angle make it a straightforward drop-in for standard end mill holders with a 1/2 inch bore.
Designed as a standard OEM-style solid carbide square end mill in the WIDIA I4S series, compatible with 1/2 inch straight-bore end mill holders and collets. Suitable for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials as indicated by material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and runout specifications. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing tooling. Verify holder bore size matches the 1/2 inch shank diameter and that tool projection provides adequate clearance for the intended cut depth. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine guarding requirements during setup.
