The WIDIA 5879217 is a 4-flute solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding machining environments. With a 7/16 inch cutting diameter, a 1 inch length of cut, and a 30-degree helix angle, this tool delivers efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting performance across a wide range of workpiece materials. The right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction make it suitable for standard CNC and manual milling setups. At 2.5 inches overall length with a straight cylindrical 7/16 inch shank, it fits common collet and end mill holder tooling systems. It is center-cutting, allowing plunge entry when the application requires it. Machinists and tooling specialists install and operate this type of cutting tool.
The WIDIA 5879217 is rated for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. It carries material code classifications P, M, K, N, S, and H, covering the full spectrum of common shop workpiece categories. The uncoated bright finish makes it appropriate for general-purpose milling where coating is not required or where regrinding is anticipated. It is part of the WIDIA I4S series, a regular-length end mill line suited to slot milling, peripheral milling, and light profiling operations in both production and job shop environments.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide square end mill for use in standard CNC machining centers, knee mills, and manual milling machines equipped with collet or end mill holder tooling accepting a 7/16 inch straight shank.
Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and the control in a safe state. Use a properly sized collet or end mill holder rated for the 7/16 inch shank diameter and torque the retention hardware according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the shank and collet bore for chips or wear before seating the tool. Follow your facility safety plan and applicable OSHA machining safety guidelines when handling and installing cutting tools.
