The WIDIA 4171318 is a CNMG431FF-style indexable carbide turning insert engineered for precision external and internal turning operations. Manufactured to grade WK20CT with a multilayer MTCVD coating of TiN, TiCN, and Al2O3, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of cutting conditions. The rhombic 80-degree insert shape provides a strong cutting edge geometry, while the FF chip breaker is optimized for controlled chip formation at moderate feeds. With an inscribed circle of 0.5000 inches, an insert length of 0.5079 inches, and a corner radius of 0.0156 inches, this insert suits finishing and semi-finishing passes where dimensional accuracy is critical.
This insert is rated primarily for cast iron (ISO K) and secondarily for steel (ISO P), making it well suited for general machining environments where operators switch between workpiece materials. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard right-hand toolholders without special orientation requirements. The FF chip breaker geometry supports consistent chip evacuation in turning centers and manual lathes operating at moderate depths of cut up to 0.1230 inches. The CNMG series is a widely used industry-standard format, and this insert is compatible with ANSI- and ISO-compliant CNMG toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods.
Designed for use in ANSI- and ISO-compliant CNMG toolholders that accept clamp or pin holding methods. ISO code CNMG120404FF and industry standard number CNMG431FF identify compatible toolholder pockets. Suitable for turning centers and manual lathes machining cast iron and steel workpieces.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamp specifications. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert breakage. Verify the correct insert orientation and chip breaker side before engaging a cut.
