The WIDIA 4170501 is a CNMG432UR-style indexable turning insert manufactured in carbide and finished with a multilayer CVD coating stack of TiN, TiCN, Al2O3, and ZrCN. The WP25CT grade targets a P25 material grade classification, making it well suited for medium to roughing cuts in steel and cast iron. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, a 0.0312-inch corner radius, and a honed cutting edge style. With 8 usable cutting edges per insert, the 4170501 delivers consistent tool life across production turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers.
This insert is designed for external and internal turning applications where steel and cast iron are the primary workpiece materials. The UR chip breaker geometry supports a broad range of depths and feed rates typical of medium turning. The negative rake angle and MTCVD multilayer coating provide wear resistance during continuous and mildly interrupted cuts. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production facilities, or maintenance environments will find this insert appropriate for roughing to semi-finishing passes on ferrous components.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for CNMG432UR seat toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, rhombic-80 indexable insert. ISO equivalent designation is CNMG120408UR. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Before indexing or replacing the insert, ensure the machine is powered down, the spindle is locked, and all stored energy is discharged. Seat pockets and clamp components should be cleaned and inspected for wear or damage before seating a new insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for clamp screws - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate.
