The WIDIA 4144008 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity hole-making in demanding shop and production environments. It features a 9.70 mm diameter, a 140-degree web-thinned point for reduced thrust and accurate self-starting, and a TiAlN coating that extends tool life at elevated cutting temperatures. At 89.00 mm overall length with a 47.00 mm flute length, this stub-length geometry provides rigidity and minimizes deflection, making it a reliable choice for machinists and tool-and-die professionals working on tight-tolerance applications.
The 4144008 is suited for general-purpose drilling in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys. Its screw machine length format is common in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and production drilling fixtures where shorter tool stick-out reduces vibration and improves hole quality. The straight cylindrical shank at 10.00 mm diameter and 40.00 mm shank length seats directly into standard collets, drill chucks, and shrink-fit holders without adapters.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit suitable for use in standard collet chucks, drill chucks, and shrink-fit toolholders accepting a 10.00 mm straight cylindrical shank; compatible with CNC and manual machine tools across steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous materials, and high-temperature alloys as stated in the WIDIA VDS201A series specifications.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and machine in a safe, locked-out state. Ensure the shank seating surface and toolholder bore are clean and free of chips before clamping to the specified holder torque per the toolholder manufacturer guidelines. Solid carbide tooling is brittle and should not be subjected to side loads or interrupted cuts beyond its rated capacity. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine tool manufacturer recommendations when setting cutting parameters.
