The WIDIA 4118596 is a carbide grooving insert in the WMT series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a 0.2496 inch cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 1.0000 inch, making it well suited for moderate to deep groove profiles. The insert is coated with TiAlN via a PVD process using the WU25PT manufacturer grade, which delivers strong wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. With a neutral hand orientation and a positive rake geometry, this insert reduces cutting forces and extends tool life across demanding workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is rated for primary use on superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S), with secondary suitability for steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, and cast iron (ISO codes P, M, K, N, H). It fits turning applications in aerospace, energy, and general machining shops where tight groove tolerances are required. The PT chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation in these difficult-to-machine materials. The neutral hand designation means it operates with equal effectiveness on standard right-hand and left-hand toolholders designed for this insert style.
Designed for use in WMT-series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept a Size 6 insert. ANSI and ISO code for this insert is WMTS250I6P08PT. Verify toolholder specifications against this code before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the correct clamp screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer's documentation - do not over-torque, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and edge position.
