The WIDIA 2870217 is a 4-flute solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metal-cutting applications. With a 1/8 inch cutting diameter and a 1/2 inch length of cut, it delivers tight-tolerance performance in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. The TiAlN-LT coating provides thermal stability and wear resistance at elevated cutting temperatures, extending tool life in high-speed and difficult-to-machine workpiece materials. A 38-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. This tool is typically installed and operated by machinists and CNC programmers in production shop environments.
The 2870217 belongs to the WIDIA Series 4V05 and is suited for slot milling, peripheral milling, and profiling operations on ferrous metals, stainless steels, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys including superalloys and titanium. Its center-cutting capability allows plunge entry as well as conventional milling passes. Right-hand cutting and right-hand flute geometry are standard for use in conventional vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers. The regular-length body and straight cylindrical shank provide rigid, concentric tool holding in standard collet and end mill holder systems.
Designed for use in standard CNC machining centers and manual mills with collet or end mill holders accepting a 1/8 inch straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. Secondary workpiece material compatibility includes high-temperature alloys.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for tool holding and runout tolerances. Ensure the spindle and tool holder are clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Confirm collet or holder clamping torque meets tool holder manufacturer specifications before initiating a cut. Refer to WIDIA cutting data recommendations for appropriate speeds, feeds, and depth of cut for the specific workpiece material being machined.
