The WALTER-PROTOTYP 7427641 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 3/8-16 UNC internal threads with a 2BX class of fit. Built from High-Speed Steel-E (HSS-E) and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, this tap resists wear and handles elevated cutting temperatures encountered in production environments. It has a semi-bottoming (modified bottoming) chamfer with 2-3 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole without sacrificing engagement on through-hole work. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm), with a thread length of 0.787 inches (20 mm) and a tapping depth of 1.535 inches (39 mm). It belongs to the TC410 Advance series and features 5 oil grooves to support lubrication during the forming process.
This tap is suited for blind hole and through-hole threading applications across a range of workpiece materials, including steels (P), stainless steels (M), cast irons (K), non-ferrous metals (N), and heat-resistant alloys (S) as indicated by the material application codes. It is appropriate for use in machining centers, CNC lathes, and manual tapping setups where a right-hand 3/8-16 UNC thread is required. The 3.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio and the TC410 Advance series design make it a practical choice for medium-production and job-shop environments.
Rated for use on material application codes P (steels), M (stainless steels), K (cast irons), N (non-ferrous metals), and S (heat-resistant alloys). Designed for blind hole and through-hole threading in standard 3/8-16 UNC applications per the TC410 Advance series specification.
Installation is performed by machinists or tooling technicians in shop environments. Ensure the spindle, fixture, and workpiece are properly secured before engaging the tap. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to maximize tool life and thread quality. Follow machine tool manufacturer torque and speed recommendations for the workpiece material and tap diameter; do not exceed the rated tapping depth of 1.535 inches.
