The WALTER-PROTOTYP 5078464 is a spiral point plug tap designed for through-hole threading in a wide range of metals. Built from powdered metal with a bright finish, this 1/2-20 UNF tap delivers consistent thread quality in Class 3B tolerance applications. It features 4 flutes and a plug chamfer that progressively engages the workpiece, making it well suited for production threading in through-hole setups. The tap measures 3.937 inches overall length with a 0.9055-inch thread length and a 0.354-inch shank diameter. Right-hand thread direction is standard. Installation does not include coolant-through capability.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations across a broad material range, including aluminum and other non-ferrous metals, steel, stainless steel, heat-resistant special alloys, and nickel, cobalt, and titanium alloys. It is appropriate for job shop, maintenance, and production environments where a reliable 1/2-20 UNF plug tap is required. The Series 23257 designation identifies the product line within the WALTER-PROTOTYP catalog.
Designed for through-hole threading in aluminum, non-ferrous metals, steel, stainless steel, heat-resistant special alloys, and nickel, cobalt, and titanium alloys. Fits standard tap holders accepting a 0.354-inch shank diameter with a 7.00 mm square drive.
This tap is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians using standard tapping machines, CNC machining centers, or hand tap handles sized for the shank diameter. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the through-hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 1/2-20 UNF before beginning the threading operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped to extend tool life. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for the correct thread pitch and direction.
