The WALTER 8115970 is a VNMG331-MP5 WPP20G grade carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on steel and cast iron workpieces. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) V-shape with a negative rake angle and a multilayer CVD coating consisting of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection across a range of cutting conditions. The insert carries an inscribed circle of 0.3750 inches, a corner radius of 0.0157 inches (1/64 inch), and an insert length of 0.6540 inches. With four usable cutting edges and an MP5 chip breaker geometry, it is suited for roughing and medium machining passes where chip control and edge durability are priorities.
This insert is intended for use on CNC lathes and turning centers in production and job-shop environments. The MP5 chip breaker geometry handles roughing and medium machining applications including turning, facing, boring, and back turning. Primary workpiece material is steel (ISO P-class, material grade P20), with cast iron (ISO K-class, material grade K30) as the secondary target material. It is neutral-hand and fits toolholders designed for VNMG-style inserts secured by clamp or pin holding methods. The insert is sold individually but subject to a minimum order quantity of 10 pieces per order.
Designed for use in VNMG-style turning toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp or pin holding. Suitable for CNC turning centers performing turning, facing, boring, and back turning on steel and cast iron. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry matches VNMG insert style and M-tolerance, N-clearance specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and secure the clamp or pin to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque procedure before resuming cutting. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker for chips or fractures each time the insert is indexed.
