The WALTER 7499383 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VCGT series, grade WSM01, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a TiAlN PVD coating applied over a carbide substrate, producing a hard, wear-resistant surface suited to the elevated cutting temperatures generated when machining stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape, a 0.008-inch corner radius, a positive rake geometry with an FM2 chip breaker, and two usable cutting edges per insert. It is screw-held and neutral-handed, making it compatible with a wide range of standard VCGT toolholders.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning, facing, boring, and back-turning operations on stainless steel and superalloys, including titanium-based materials. Secondary workpiece material suitability extends to carbon and alloy steels, non-ferrous metals, and hard materials. It is appropriate for both finishing and semi-finishing passes where tight tolerances and controlled chip formation are required. The FM2 chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip evacuation at moderate feed rates, reducing the risk of built-up edge and surface finish degradation on difficult-to-machine alloys.
Designed for use in VCGT-style screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, 35-degree diamond insert. ISO code VCGT160402-FM2 WSM01; industry standard number VCGT3(3)0.5-FM2 WSM01. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by machining professionals on CNC or manual turning equipment. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper seating and edge registration.
