The WALTER 7054081 is a solid carbide turning insert with ISO designation VCGT160402-FM2 WSM20S, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (VCGT style) with a positive rake angle of 18 degrees and a honed cutting edge for clean, consistent chip formation. The multilayer PVD coating - TiAlN, Al2O3, and Al - provides thermal resistance and extended tool life when cutting abrasive and work-hardening materials. Two cutting edges per insert maximize cost efficiency. It is installed and indexed by licensed machining professionals or tool-and-die technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium as primary workpiece materials, with secondary suitability for general steel. The FM2 chip breaker geometry is optimized for light-to-medium finishing cuts on these material groups, corresponding to ISO material grades M20, S20, and P20. The screw-on holding method and standard G-tolerance ensure consistent, repeatable positioning in compatible toolholders. It is a neutral-hand insert applicable to both left- and right-hand setups depending on toolholder orientation.
Designed for use in VCGT-style screw-on toolholders accepting a 35-degree diamond insert with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 3/16-inch insert thickness. Compatible toolholders must conform to ANSI and ISO standards for VCGT160402 inserts. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and screw size before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket for debris or wear before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
