The WALTER 7021462 is a VNGG160401-MS3 WSM01 carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. It features a TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrN PVD coating under the proprietary WSM01 grade designation, offering wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The insert has a 35-degree diamond shape (V), a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, and a honed cutting edge style. With a 0.1 mm corner radius and 9.53 mm inscribed circle, it is suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes where edge geometry and surface finish are critical. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations. Its primary workpiece material targets are stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S). It also performs on steel, non-ferrous metals, and hard materials (ISO codes P, N, and H). The MS3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation in these material groups. The insert conforms to both ANSI and ISO standards and carries the industry standard number VNGG3(3)0.2-MS3 WSM01. It is a multi-use insert suitable for a range of lathe and turning center setups across material grades M10, S10, P10, N10, and H20.
Designed for use in VNGG-style toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 35-degree diamond insert with clamp and pin holding. Suitable for CNC turning centers and manual lathes configured for negative-rake VNGG inserts per ANSI and ISO toolholder standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed away from the work zone before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces and secure with the appropriate clamp and pin hardware to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition before each use; do not use chipped or delaminated inserts.
