The WALTER 7021460 is a solid carbide turning insert in the DNGG-MS3 series, designed for high-performance metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ISO designation DNGG150404-MS3 WSM01 and features a PVD-applied TiAlN with Al2O3 ZrN multilayer coating for heat resistance and edge durability. The 55-degree diamond insert shape provides a pointed geometry suited to contour turning and profiling. With a 0.4 mm corner radius and a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, this insert delivers controlled chip formation and stable cutting forces. Cutting edge style is honed for consistent performance on difficult-to-machine materials.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S), with secondary suitability for steel, non-ferrous metals, and hard materials (ISO codes P, N, and H). Applicable material grades are M10, S10, P10, N10, and H20. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, and back turning in both roughing and semi-finishing operations. The MS3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for these demanding workpiece materials, promoting reliable chip evacuation at moderate to aggressive feed rates. This insert is appropriate for use in aerospace, energy, and general machining environments where stainless and exotic alloy cutting is routine.
Designed for use in standard DNGG-style toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin holding. Industry standard number DNGG431-MS3 WSM01 and ISO code DNGG150404-MS3 WSM01 apply. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician following standard insert seating procedures for DNGG clamp-and-pin toolholders. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp to prevent micro-movement under cutting load. Inspect the insert pocket and pin for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
