The WALTER 7021455 is a solid carbide turning insert designated CNGG120401-MS3 WSM01, engineered for precision metal-cutting operations in CNC turning applications. This insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation and a 0.1 mm corner radius, making it well-suited for controlled chip formation in demanding materials. The TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrN multi-layer coating is applied via PVD process, delivering thermal resistance and wear protection at the cutting edge. With four usable cutting edges and a honed edge style, the insert provides consistent performance across turning, facing, and boring operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working with tight tolerances will find the CNGG-MS3 series geometry and WSM01 grade combination effective for high-productivity finishing and semi-finishing passes.
This insert is designed primarily for machining stainless steel and superalloys including titanium, corresponding to ISO material groups M and S. It also supports secondary applications in steel, non-ferrous metals, and hard materials (ISO groups P, N, and H). The MS3 chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip evacuation in these material families. Typical install scenarios include CNC turning centers and manual lathes where clamp-and-pin insert holding is used. The insert conforms to both ANSI and ISO standards and is identified by ISO code CNGG120401-MS3 WSM01 and industry standard number CNGG4(3)0.2-MS3 WSM01.
Designed for use in CNGG-style toolholders that accept clamp-and-pin insert retention. Compatible with CNC turning centers and manual lathes configured for 80-degree diamond inserts with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards for CNGG geometry.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always de-energize and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping pin for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as a compromised pocket will affect edge life and surface finish. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque guidance and verify insert seating before resuming cuts.
