The WALTER 6944736 is a CNMG120408-RM5 WSM30S coated solid carbide turning insert designed for demanding metal-cutting operations on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle and a 1/32 inch (0.0315 inch) corner radius. The WSM30S proprietary grade uses a PVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 multilayer coating from the Tiger-tec Silver series. This insert is part of the CNMG-RM5 series with a chamfered and honed cutting edge and negative rake geometry. It is installed and replaced by machinists and tool-crib technicians on CNC lathes and turning centers.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations in M30, S30, and P30 material grade applications per ISO classification. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and superalloys including titanium, with steel as the secondary workpiece material. The RM5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for these demanding materials. The neutral hand orientation allows flexible setup across right- and left-hand toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods. Applications include both roughing and semi-finishing passes where controlled chip formation and edge stability are required.
Designed for CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2 inch inscribed circle insert with a 0.2030 inch hole diameter. Industry standard number CNMG432-RM5 WSM30S. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for CNMG120408 insert geometry. Verify toolholder clamp and pin configuration before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the turret locked out before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp or pin - do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture under excessive clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a new edge.
