The WALTER 6944731 is a solid carbide turning insert in the WNMG080408-RM5 WMP20S configuration, part of the Tiger-tec Silver series. It features an 80-degree trigon insert shape with a neutral hand orientation and a 1/32-inch (0.0315-inch) corner radius. The CVD coating stack of TiCN / Al2O3 / TiCN delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. With six cutting edges and an inscribed circle of 1/2 inch, this insert is engineered for high-productivity turning on steel and stainless steel. Licensed machinists and CNC turning technicians working in job shops or production environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel (ISO P25) and stainless steel (ISO M20), with secondary capability on super-alloys and titanium (ISO S20). The RM5 chip breaker geometry targets general-purpose roughing and medium finishing passes. At a maximum depth of cut of 4.50 mm (0.177 inches), it handles both material-removal and finishing stages on a single insert style. Typical applications include shaft turning, flange facing, and light boring on CNC lathes in residential shop or industrial production environments.
Designed for use in WNMG-style toolholders that accept a 1/2-inch inscribed-circle trigon insert with a 0.203-inch hole diameter. Meets ANSI and ISO standards; industry standard number WNMG432-RM5 WMP20S. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M); secondary application covers super-alloys and titanium (ISO S).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before clamping. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications and verify insert seating before resuming cuts.
