The WALTER 6944683 is a CNMG120408-RM5 WMP20S grade solid carbide turning insert designed for indexable toolholders in CNC turning operations. It features a CVD-applied triple-layer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiCN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert carries an 80-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a 0.8 mm corner radius. With four usable cutting edges and the RM5 chip breaker geometry, it delivers controlled chip formation across a broad range of depths of cut up to 12.90 mm. This insert is intended for use by machinists and tooling professionals in production turning environments.
This insert is engineered primarily for steel and stainless steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes P and M, with secondary suitability for super-alloys and titanium (ISO code S). It is applicable across turning, facing, and boring operations, making it a versatile option for shops running mixed production. The RM5 chip breaker geometry suits medium-duty cutting conditions where chip control and surface finish consistency are priorities. The WMP20S grade sits within material grade designations M20, P25, and S20, covering a useful range of feeds and speeds in general-purpose turning.
Designed for use in CNMG-style indexable turning toolholders that accept a 432 insert size (0.5000 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thickness). Industry standard number CNMG432-RM5 WMP20S. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards. Suitable for steel, stainless steel, super-alloys, and titanium workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's recommended clamping torque procedure using the specified clamp or pin-lock hardware - do not substitute fasteners.
