The WALTER 6917248 is a solid carbide coated turning insert in the CCMT120404-FM4 WSM20S designation, designed for precision metal cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle and positive side clearance, making it well suited for finishing-grade chip loads. The FM4 chip breaker geometry controls chip flow during light to moderate depth-of-cut passes, and the PVD-applied TiCN/Al2O3/Al coating stack provides wear resistance and thermal stability. The insert holds two usable cutting edges per insert and is secured via screw clamping. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop turning environments.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring applications where the primary workpiece material is stainless steel, superalloys, or titanium (ISO material codes M and S). It also performs in secondary applications on steel (ISO code P). The FM4 chip breaker is optimized for finishing operations, with a maximum depth of cut of 1.50 mm (0.1000 inch). The CCMT insert style seats in standard CCMT-compatible toolholders and is compliant with both ANSI (CCMT431-FM4 WSM20S) and ISO (CCMT120404-FM4 WSM20S) standards, making it interchangeable across a wide range of qualified toolholder systems.
Designed for use in CCMT-style screw-on toolholders compatible with ANSI size code 431 and ISO size code 120404. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring operations on stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and steel workpieces.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to toolholder manufacturer specifications - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide body. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping components for chips or debris before seating a new insert.
