The WALTER 6890823 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG-MS3 series, designed for precision metal removal on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries a multilayer PVD coating - TiAlN, Al2O3, and Al - using the proprietary WSM10S coating designation, delivering heat and wear resistance across demanding interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and an MS3 chipbreaker geometry with a honed cutting edge. Corner radius measures 0.8 mm (1/32 inch), and the inscribed circle is 12.7 mm (0.5 inches). Four cutting edges are available per insert, making this an economical choice for high-production turning operations.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations in CNC lathes and machining centers operating on stainless steel and superalloy workpieces. The MS3 chipbreaker is optimized for medium-duty cutting conditions common in aerospace, energy, and process-industry component machining. Secondary application covers carbon and alloy steels. The negative rake geometry and CNMG-style clamping - compatible with both clamp and pin holding methods - make it appropriate for rigid setups where cutting forces and tool stability are critical concerns. Machinists working under ISO and ANSI toolholder standards will find this insert a direct fit.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders meeting ANSI and ISO standards with a clearance code of N and tolerance code of M. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO material code M) and superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S). Secondary application is steel (ISO material code P). Material grades M1, S10, and P10 are specified.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom personnel following standard CNC lathe insert-change procedures. Power down and zero out the machine before seating or removing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips before clamping - contamination on the seating surface is a primary cause of premature edge failure. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 12.9 mm (0.508 inches) as specified for this insert geometry.
