The WALTER 6839100 is a CCMT-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. Manufactured in an 80-degree diamond shape with a positive rake angle of 12 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle, this carbide insert carries a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al under the proprietary grade designation WSM20S. It features a 0.8 mm corner radius, an inscribed circle of 9.53 mm (0.3750 inches), and a maximum depth of cut of 9.67 mm (0.3810 inches). The RM4 chip breaker geometry targets stable chip control during turning, facing, and boring operations. It is installed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians on screw-clamp toolholders.
This insert is primarily engineered for stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S), with secondary suitability for steel (ISO code P). Corresponding material grades are M20, S20, and P20. The neutral hand orientation suits a wide range of CCMT-compatible toolholder setups used in both OD turning and boring bar applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. The RM4 chip breaker is suited to light-to-medium depth-of-cut passes where controlled chip evacuation and edge stability are priorities when machining difficult-to-cut alloys.
Designed for use in CCMT-style screw-clamp toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. ISO code: CCMT09T308-RM4 WSM20S. Industry standard number: CCMT3(2.5)2-RM4 WSM20S. Suitable for applications across turning, facing, and boring on CNC lathes and turning centers.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians using the appropriate Torx or hex key for the insert clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended depth-of-cut or feed rate for the insert size.
