The WALTER 6839098 is a CCMT-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal removal on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the ISO designation CCMT09T304-RM4 and is produced in manufacturer grade WSM30S with a multilayer TiCN, Al2O3, and Al coating applied via PVD process. The 80-degree diamond insert geometry provides two cutting edges and a positive rake angle of 12 degrees, contributing to lower cutting forces and reduced heat buildup. Corner radius measures 0.4 mm (1/64 inch), and the inscribed circle diameter is 9.53 mm (0.375 inch). The RM4 chip breaker geometry is suited to finishing and light roughing passes. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists install this insert in screw-held toolholders on lathes and boring applications.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on stainless steel and superalloy workpieces, where PVD-coated carbide grades are preferred to maintain edge integrity at elevated temperatures. The WSM30S grade targets ISO material groups M30 and S30 as primary classifications, with P30 steel as a secondary application range. It is applicable in both light and moderate cutting conditions where a chamfered and honed cutting edge style helps control built-up edge on difficult-to-machine materials. The CCMT-RM4 series is commonly used on CNC turning centers and manual lathes requiring a neutral-hand, screw-locked insert.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-production insert for CCMT screw-held toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO CCMT09T304 standards. Compatible with toolholders accepting CCMT 3(2.5)1 inserts per industry standard number CCMT3(2.5)1-RM4 WSM30S.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp screw to seat the insert securely in the pocket - do not overtighten by hand. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installation to prevent insert rocking and premature edge failure.
