The WALTER 6839097 is a CCMT-style carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining environments. Manufactured to both ANSI and ISO standards, this insert carries the WSM20S grade designation with a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al for wear resistance and thermal stability. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape provides strong cutting geometry with a positive rake angle of 12 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle. Intended for use by CNC machinists and toolroom professionals, the insert fits screw-lock toolholders and delivers consistent performance across turning, facing, and boring operations.
This insert is rated for roughing and medium machining applications. Its primary target materials are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, with secondary suitability for steel. The RM4 chip breaker geometry is optimized to control chip flow and reduce cutting forces in these tough material groups. The neutral hand orientation and two cutting edges make it a versatile option for standard external and internal turning setups on CNC lathes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for CCMT-style screw-lock turning toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code CCMT32.51 and ISO insert code CCMT09T304. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on CNC lathes.
Installation is performed by licensed machinists or qualified CNC operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and tighten the clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before installation to avoid seating errors that can cause premature edge failure.
