The WALTER 6839031 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ISO designation CCMT09T302-FM4 WSM20S. It is designed for single-point turning operations on CNC and manual lathes and is used in turning, facing, and boring applications. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a positive rake angle of 6 degrees and a honed cutting edge for consistent engagement. The WSM20S grade uses a PVD-applied TiCN, Al2O3, and Al multilayer coating that provides wear resistance and thermal stability. Two cutting edges are available per insert, and the FM4 chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip control across a range of feed rates and depths.
This insert is intended for machining stainless steel and superalloys and titanium as primary workpiece materials, with steel as a secondary application. It falls within material grades M20, S20, and P20 under ISO classification. The FM4 chip breaker geometry is suited for light to medium roughing and finishing passes. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard right-hand toolholders designed for CCMT-style inserts. It is used in production and maintenance machining environments by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
Designed for use in CCMT-style screw-on toolholders with a neutral hand orientation. Compatible with toolholder systems accepting inserts with a 0.375-inch (3/8-inch) inscribed circle, CCMT insert shape code C, clearance code C, and tolerance code M per ANSI and ISO standards.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or manual lathe operators using a torx or hex key appropriate for the toolholder screw. The machine spindle must be brought to a full stop and all stored energy discharged before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamp screw, and inspect the seating surface for chips or debris that could affect insert stability. Verify correct insert orientation and cutting edge engagement before resuming machining.
