The WALTER 6836812 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT-MM4 series, designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. It carries the ISO designation CCMT060204-MM4 WSM20S and features a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al for extended tool life in abrasive and high-temperature cutting environments. The 80-degree diamond insert shape provides a strong cutting geometry, and the honed cutting edge style reduces chipping during interrupted or continuous cuts. With a 0.4 mm corner radius and a positive rake angle of 7 degrees, this insert is engineered for finishing and semi-finishing passes where surface quality and edge stability matter.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on stainless steel and superalloys and titanium as primary workpiece materials, with steel as a secondary application. It fits standard CCMT toolholders with screw clamping and is used by machinists and CNC turning specialists in both production shops and job shops. The MM4 chip breaker geometry is suited for controlled chip formation in materials that are prone to stringy or tough chips, such as austenitic stainless steels and nickel-based superalloys.
Designed for use in CCMT-style screw-clamp turning toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. The ISO code CCMT060204-MM4 WSM20S and industry standard number CCMT2(1.5)1-MM4 WSM20S can be used to verify toolholder and pocket compatibility. Primary workpiece material codes M and S cover stainless steel and superalloys and titanium; secondary material code P covers steel.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Secure the insert with the appropriate torx or hex key to the manufacturer-specified clamp screw for CCMT pockets - do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture under excessive clamp force. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a fresh insert to ensure proper seating and runout.
