The WALTER 6529442 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GX24 series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the WKP23S grade designation and features a CVD-applied Al2O3 and TiN coating for wear resistance at elevated cutting speeds. The insert delivers a 4.00 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 2.80 mm, making it well suited for medium-depth grooving passes. A positive rake geometry and UF4 chip breaker promote efficient chip evacuation in continuous and light interrupted cuts. Installation requires a compatible GX24-series self-grip toolholder. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and CNC operators are the primary users.
This insert is intended for machining steel and cast iron workpieces in production turning environments. The primary workpiece material classification is P (steel) and the secondary classification is K (cast iron), covering a broad range of ferrous component work. Its double-ended design allows two usable cutting edges per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost in high-volume operations. The GX24 series self-grip holding method provides repeatable insert seating without additional clamping hardware, which speeds up insert changes in production settings.
Designed for use with GX24-series self-grip grooving toolholders. ANSI and ISO code for toolholder matching is GX24-3E400N04-UF4 WKP23S. Confirm toolholder bore and clamping style before ordering.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed with the machine spindle stopped and all axis motion disabled per standard lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate insert key or extraction tool specified for GX24-series toolholders to avoid damaging the self-grip seat. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Refer to the toolholder manufacturer cutting data recommendations for starting speeds and feeds when applying this grade to a new workpiece material.
