The WALTER 6118735 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. Manufactured in the Tiger-tec series, this insert carries the WSM33S grade designation and features a multilayer PVD coating system combining Al2O3, TiAlN, and ZrCN for thermal resistance and edge stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert delivers a 0.25 inch (6.35 mm) cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 0.1378 inch (3.5 mm) and a corner radius of 0.0197 inch (0.50 mm). It is clamp-held, neutral-handed, and configured with a UF4 chip breaker geometry suited for interrupted cuts and finishing passes.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining superalloys, with material grade compatibility extending across ISO material groups S, M, and P. That makes it applicable across a range of workpiece materials including stainless steels, titanium alloys, and general steel. The UF4 chip breaker geometry is optimized for light-to-medium finishing cuts where chip control and edge integrity are critical. Typical applications include precision grooving and parting in aerospace component machining, energy sector parts, and medical turning work where superalloy and stainless materials are common.
Designed for use with WALTER GX-system clamp-style grooving toolholders. The ANSI code for this insert is GX244E635N05UF4 WSM33S and the ISO code is GX24-4E635N05-UF4. Confirm toolholder seat geometry and clamping style before installation. Primary workpiece material compatibility codes are S, M, and P per ISO designation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state before any insert change. Ensure the toolholder seat and clamp surfaces are clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert. Clamp torque should follow the toolholder manufacturer specifications for GX-series clamping systems. Verify insert seating and edge orientation before resuming cutting operations.
