The WALTER 5848696 is a carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting in demanding machining environments. It carries the industry designation VBMT332-PS5WSM10 and features a multilayer PVD coating of TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN for extended tool life under high heat and abrasion. The insert has a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 12 degrees, a 5-degree relief angle, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. Two cutting edges are available per insert. The PS5 chip breaker geometry promotes efficient chip control across a range of cutting parameters. CNC machinists and toolroom operators install this insert in compatible screw-lock toolholders for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations.
This insert is rated for primary use on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes M and S. It is also rated as a secondary option for steel (ISO code P), making it a practical choice across mixed-material production runs. The VBMT-PS5 series is suited to finishing and semi-finishing passes where consistent edge geometry and coating durability are critical. Typical applications include aerospace component machining, medical part turning, and general precision turning on CNC lathes and turning centers where tight tolerances and difficult materials are common.
Designed for use in VBMT-style screw-lock toolholders compatible with ANSI insert code VBMT332 and ISO insert code VBMT160408. Verify toolholder bore and seat geometry before installation. No specific toolholder model compatibility was provided in the product data.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing inserts. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition before each use; do not reuse inserts showing chipping, cratering, or coating breakdown on active edges.
