The WALTER 5847591 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying ANSI designation CNMG431-NF4WSM10 and ISO designation CNMG120404-NF4 WSM10. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch (0.0157 inch) corner radius. The WSM10 grade is paired with a multilayer PVD coating - TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN - engineered for cutting stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium as primary workpiece materials. With four usable cutting edges and an NF4 chip breaker geometry, this insert suits production turning operations where edge security and chip control on difficult materials are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible toolholders for turning, facing, and boring applications.
This insert targets finish-to-medium turning of stainless steel (ISO material group M), superalloys, and titanium (ISO material group S) as its primary application, with steel (ISO material group P) as a secondary workpiece material. The NF4 chip breaker geometry and honed cutting edge style are optimized for these demanding materials in both roughing and finishing passes. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.1692 inch, making it suitable for moderate stock removal as well as finishing work. Typical installation platforms include negative-rake CNMG-compatible toolholders used on CNC lathes and machining centers in job shop, aerospace, and medical manufacturing environments.
Designed to seat in negative-rake CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin holding. Compatible toolholders must accept the CNMG431 (ANSI) or CNMG120404 (ISO) insert form. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping system before installation.
Install and index this insert with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping hardware for the toolholder; do not over-tighten the clamp screw or lock pin. Inspect the insert seat and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new edge. Disposal of worn carbide inserts should follow applicable shop waste and recycling procedures for tungsten carbide.
