The WALTER 5619946 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT style, designed for precision metal cutting operations in demanding industrial environments. The insert features a multilayer PVD coating combining TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN for extended tool life and heat resistance. With a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, 1/32 inch corner radius, and a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) geometry, this insert delivers controlled chip formation across a positive rake angle of 12 degrees. It carries manufacturer grade WSM20 and belongs to the Tiger-tec Series VBMT-PS5, indicating performance optimization for stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in production turning centers and manual lathes.
This insert is engineered primarily for turning, facing, boring, and back turning operations on stainless steel and superalloys including titanium, classified under ISO material codes M and S. It also performs as a secondary grade on steel (ISO code P), covering material grades M20, P20, and S20. The PS5 chip breaker geometry and chamfered, honed cutting edge style support stable chip control during interrupted and continuous cuts. Applications include general production turning in aerospace, oil and gas, and precision machining shops where stainless and high-temp alloys are common workpiece materials.
Designed for VBMT-style toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. ANSI insert code VBMT332; ISO insert code VBMT160408. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 0.173 inch hole diameter screw-lock insert. Verify toolholder clearance code B and tolerance code M before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or manual lathe operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified torx or hex key for the clamping screw to avoid stripping the screw seat - do not overtighten by feel alone; follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specification for the screw size used. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
