The WALTER 5612587 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. Carrying grade WPP23 with a CVD-applied Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN multilayer coating from the Tiger-tec series, this insert delivers consistent cutting performance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The cutting width is 3.00 mm (0.1181 inches), the corner radius is 0.20 mm (0.0079 inches), and the overall insert length is 24.00 mm (0.9449 inches). The double-ended, neutral-hand geometry and CE4 chip breaker make it suitable for general-purpose grooving where controlled chip formation is required. Installed using a clamp-style holder, it is a standard choice for production machinists and toolroom technicians.
This insert is rated for universal primary workpiece material application, covering material codes K, M, P, and S, which correspond broadly to cast iron, stainless steel, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys. The WPP23 grade with P20 and K30 material grades positions it for medium-duty cutting conditions. The Tiger-tec CVD coating provides thermal resistance and wear resistance suited to moderate-to-high cutting speeds. Typical install scenarios include automated turning cells running mixed-material batches and manual lathe operations where a single insert grade needs to cover several material types without a tooling change.
Designed for use in clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept the GX insert style with insert size code 2E300N02. ANSI and ISO code GX24-2E300N020-CE4 can be used to confirm holder compatibility. Suitable for turning applications across K, M, P, and S workpiece material classifications.
Installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket faces before tightening the clamp to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before seating a new edge to ensure proper contact and runout control. Both cutting edges should be inspected individually before use, and a worn or chipped edge should never be rotated into service without confirming the pocket and clamp are undamaged.
