The WALTER 5584718 is a solid carbide turning insert designated CNMG542-NM4WSM20, engineered for demanding material removal on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a 5/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The WSM20 grade features a multilayer PVD coating combining TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN for heat resistance and wear performance in the M20, S20, and P20 material grade range. With four cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, this insert delivers consistent performance across roughing and medium machining operations. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and tooling specialists in metalworking and precision manufacturing are the primary users.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers handling stainless steel and superalloy workpieces, with secondary application in general steel machining. The NM4 chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium machining, managing chip flow effectively at moderate-to-heavy depths of cut. The insert seats in CNMG-compatible toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods. The neutral hand orientation allows use in a variety of standard toolholder setups commonly found in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 542 ANSI size code insert with clamp or pin holding. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S); secondary application covers steel (ISO material code P).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct clamping screw torque specified by the toolholder manufacturer for CNMG clamp-style or pin-style seats. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for debris or wear before installing a fresh insert edge.
