The VLIER SSS56N is a threaded spring plunger designed for precise positioning, indexing, and light detent applications in mechanical assemblies. It features a 5/16-18 thread with a 1 inch thread length and a stainless steel body construction. The plunger nose diameter ranges from 0.133 to 0.135 inches with a 3/16 inch projection beyond the body face. A built-in locking element secures the plunger body in the tapped hole, preventing loosening under vibration. Initial end force is 3 pounds and final end force is 15 pounds. Machinists, tool and die makers, and mechanical assembly technicians install this type of component in production fixtures, jigs, and machine slides.
The SSS56N suits applications where controlled, repeatable detent force is required in a compact threaded format. The stainless steel body and nose material make it appropriate for environments where corrosion resistance is a priority, including washdown areas, food-adjacent machinery, and outdoor or humid service conditions. The locking element is particularly useful in high-vibration environments where a standard non-locking plunger could back out over time.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation threaded spring plunger for mechanical fixtures, jigs, slides, and assemblies requiring a 5/16-18 threaded mounting hole and a standard-length stainless steel spring plunger with locking element.
Installation requires a properly tapped 5/16-18 hole in the receiving component. Power down or de-energize any machine or fixture before installing or removing spring plungers in active assemblies. Use a hex key or appropriate driver on the locking element to seat the body flush or to the required depth. Follow the equipment manufacturer's torque guidelines for the host assembly; do not over-torque, as this can damage the locking element or distort the plunger bore.
