The VLIER SSM50A is a stubby threaded spring plunger designed for precision indexing, positioning, and light detent applications in mechanical assemblies. It features an 8-32 thread size with a thread length of 0.437 inches and a maximum plunger diameter of 0.070 inches. The plunger nose projects 0.052 inches and delivers an initial end force of 1.5 pounds, increasing to a final end force of 4.75 pounds under full compression. Both the body and nose are constructed from stainless steel, making this plunger suitable for corrosive or washdown environments. It is installed by machinists, toolmakers, and mechanical assembly technicians in production and maintenance settings.
This plunger is suited for applications requiring a compact, low-profile detent element in tight quarters where a standard-length plunger will not fit. Typical uses include fixture locating, panel retention, drawer positioning, and light-load indexing mechanisms. The stubby body profile allows installation in shallow boss depths or thin-wall tapped features where axial space is limited. It is commonly specified on jigs, fixtures, tooling plates, and precision mechanical devices across industrial and manufacturing environments.
Designed as a direct-thread replacement or new-installation spring plunger for any tapped 8-32 hole requiring a stubby-length detent element in fixtures, tooling, or mechanical assemblies.
Installation is performed by threading the plunger body directly into a pre-tapped 8-32 hole using an appropriate hex key or driver. Ensure the mating hole is clean and free of debris before installation. De-energize or release any stored mechanical energy in the assembly before servicing spring plungers. Do not overtighten, as the stainless steel body can be damaged by excessive torque in hard-material tapped holes.
