The VARGUS 80218 is a straight-flute internal thread mill designed for cutting UNC and UNF threads in a single helical pass. Built from solid carbide with a bright finish, this tool offers the rigidity and wear resistance required for precision threading in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features 3 flutes, a 0.083 inch cutting diameter, a 0.236 inch length of cut, and a 2.244 inch overall length. The 1/4 inch shank diameter suits standard collet and end mill holders. At 40 teeth per inch, it is matched to fine-pitch thread applications starting at a No. 4 nominal diameter. Machinists and tool and die professionals specify this cutter for CNC machining centers where thread form accuracy and tool life are priorities.
This thread mill is used in precision machining environments including job shops, production facilities, and toolrooms. It is suited for internal thread milling operations on CNC machining centers with helical interpolation capability. Typical applications include threading small-diameter holes in aluminum, steel, stainless, and similar materials where tap breakage risk is a concern or where a single tool must cover a range of thread depths. The minimum nominal diameter it addresses is a No. 4, making it appropriate for small-hole threading work common in instrument, fastener, and fixture manufacturing.
Designed for internal thread milling of UNC and UNF threads with a minimum nominal diameter of No. 4, using standard 1/4 inch collet or end mill toolholders on CNC machining centers with helical interpolation capability.
Thread mills must be programmed with helical interpolation on a 3-axis or greater CNC machining center - this tool is not intended for use in conventional drill presses or manual lathes. Verify spindle speed, feed rate, and helix pitch are calculated for the specific thread form before cutting. Secure the 1/4 inch shank fully in a precision collet or milling chuck to minimize runout. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use, as solid carbide is brittle and edge condition directly affects thread quality.
