The VARGUS 58988 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 4.5 threads per inch (TPI). Built in the 5ER insert style, it features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves heat resistance and extends cutting life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert has a 60-degree included angle, a 15.88 mm (0.625 inches) inscribed circle, and a thickness of 6.35 mm. It is intended for right-hand thread cutting and suits CNC lathes and turning centers used in production threading operations. Machinists and tool and die professionals specify this insert for consistent UN-profile thread quality on external features.
The 58988 is suited for external threading on workpieces across multiple material categories, including carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, cast irons, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys, and heat-resistant superalloys. This broad material compatibility is reflected in the primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. It is appropriate for both production shop and job shop environments where UN thread forms to ANSI B1.1:74 are required on turned components. The insert fits standard 5ER toolholders and seats in laydown orientation.
Designed as a replacement-style threading insert for standard 5ER laydown toolholders used in external UN thread turning applications. Compatible with workpiece material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S as defined by the manufacturer. Conforms to ANSI B1.1:74 thread standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. The machine spindle must be stopped and the turret or toolpost must be safely indexed or locked out before seating or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver specified for the toolholder to secure the insert to the correct clamping torque per the toolholder manufacturer's documentation. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure proper contact and accurate thread form.
