The VARGUS 53766 is a laydown-style threading insert designed for external thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, it delivers consistent performance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert produces partial profile 60-degree threads at 48-16 TPI, covering a pitch range of 0.50 to 1.50 mm. The right-hand cut geometry suits standard external threading operations. With an inscribed circle of 9.53 mm (3/8 inch) and a thickness of 3.6 mm, this 3JER-style insert mounts in compatible laydown toolholders for precise, repeatable thread form. Machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary users.
The 53766 insert is suited for external threading passes on turned components in general machining, aerospace, medical device, and fabrication applications. Its universal primary workpiece material compatibility spans multiple material groups, including H, K, M, N, P, and S classifications, covering steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous materials, heat-resistant alloys, and hardened materials. The partial profile design allows a single insert to thread multiple pitches within the 48-16 TPI range without a toolholder change, making it practical for shops running varied jobs.
Designed for use in laydown threading toolholders accepting 3JER-style inserts with a 9.53 mm inscribed circle. Verify toolholder pocket dimensions and clamping style before installation.
Threading inserts are installed and replaced by machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing any insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not overtighten the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper clamping and thread form accuracy.
