The VARGUS 53686 is a laydown-style solid carbide threading insert designed for cutting external NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads on CNC lathes and threading machines. It carries an 18 TPI pitch, a 60-degree included angle, and a 3/8-inch (0.3750-inch) inscribed circle, making it a standard 3ER-style insert. The TiAlN coating is applied via PVD process, delivering high surface hardness and heat resistance for demanding threading operations. The SCB chipbreaker geometry supports reliable chip control across a wide range of workpiece materials. This insert is suited for machinists and tooling technicians running production or repair threading in shops, field service environments, or manufacturing facilities.
This insert is used for right-hand external NPT thread milling and turning applications across universal workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys, as reflected by the primary material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The NPT thread standard makes it applicable to pipe fitting and fluid system component threading in plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping production. It fits standard 3ER insert pockets and is sold individually, with a minimum order quantity of 10 units per purchase.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard 3ER-style laydown threading insert pockets used in external NPT threading applications. Compatible with universal workpiece materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with insert indexing and threading tool setup. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or replacing the insert. Ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of debris before seating to maintain proper thread form geometry. Follow the machine manufacturer torque guidance for the clamping screw to avoid insert movement or pocket damage during cuts.
