The VARGUS 53649 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external Whitworth thread cutting on CNC and manual lathes. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert is sized at a 9.53 mm (3/8 inch) inscribed circle and measures 3.60 mm thick. It cuts right-hand external threads at 14 threads per inch (TPI) with a 55-degree included angle, conforming to Whitworth thread standards including B.S. 84:1956 and DIN 259. This insert is used by machinists and toolroom operators in production and maintenance turning applications.
This insert is suited for threading operations on a wide range of materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, and heat-resistant superalloys, as indicated by its universal workpiece material rating (material codes H, K, M, N, P, S). It fits standard laydown insert toolholders that accept the 3ER insert style. Typical applications include threading pipe fittings, fasteners, and mechanical components requiring Whitworth-standard external thread forms.
Designed for use in laydown threading toolholders accepting the 3ER insert style with a 9.53 mm inscribed circle. Compatible with workpiece materials classified under codes H, K, M, N, P, and S per the manufacturer rating. Conforms to B.S. 84:1956, DIN 259, and ISO 228/1:1982 thread standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer guidelines for insert seating and clamping torque. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Handle solid carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
